Outdoor adventure, a thriving food scene, and diverse arts and cultural attractions… it’s easy to fall in love with East Tennessee! The region’s rich southern hospitality lends a laid-back, welcoming vibe to the people and places who call the area home.

East Tennessee is an outdoor lover’s paradise. Within an hour’s drive of Oak Ridge lies three national parks—the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Big South Fork National Recreation Area, and the Obed Wild and Scenic River. Closer to home, Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness offers nearly 50 miles of multi-use trails, and the area’s numerous lakes and rivers provide opportunities for boating, fishing, and other water sports.

There are sports galore, as East Tennessee is the proud home of the University of Tennessee Volunteers, the Knoxville Ice Bears, and the Tennessee Smokies. And, both Knoxville and Oak Ridge offer numerous opportunities for running, soccer, golf, tennis, and swimming.

The region has a growing arts and culture scene. Market Square in downtown Knoxville is a hotbed of activity with its many shops, restaurants, and galleries, as well as dozens of seasonal events throughout the year. The Tennessee Theater and Bijou Theater host concerts and plays year round, and the local food scene features dozens of up-and-coming chefs and farm to table options, as well as tried and true favorites like southern BBQ.

The best part is the low cost of living, with no state income tax. East Tennessee’s majestic mountain beauty and limitless recreation and entertainment options can be enjoyed without spending a fortune.
